I have not yet mentioned the unfortunate incident that happened to my Cousins, Aunt and Uncle had over Christmas. They were meant to be flying over on the 20th, in plenty of time for the big day (they were supposed to stay till Boxing Day). Except, unfortunately, they had booked to fly with Ryan Air. A big mistake!!!

The problem that they encountered was that they never actually left England. Ryan Air was meant to get them here by 8 o’clock in the evening. But the plane was delayed. And delayed. And delayed. Then, at about 2am they finally boarded their plane. Then they were taken off it again at about 3am. They drove back to their house, which is about 2 hours away, but wthout their luggage, since there was no one left from Ryan Air to get the bags off the plane. They then went back to the airport for 8am, but with no further luck they went home again, still without their luggage.

We were all very disappointed, but my Dad found them a new ticket, only this time to Katowice, which is about an hour and a half away from Krakow, where we are. So instead they came for New Year’s Eve.

New Year’s Eve was a right laugh. We spent nearly the whole night eating and playing charades. But at about 11pm we went to the main square, which is called the Rynek. It was really packed! Some of it was cornered off as they were still packing away the Christmas market. Another large section was closed because it was where the fireworks were. The other half was decked out with a huge stage and two massive TV screens at either side.

You were only allowed into this area if you didn’t have any glass bottles. They were checking everyone’s bags who went through (I think this was because it is a tradition here to smash bottles on the ground at New Year). My Mum couldn’t get through because she had two bottles of champagne in her rucksack, which they found. But my Dad, who has a giant coat with big pockets, smuggled them through by putting the bottles inside. This went unnoticed, I think because they thought he was just fat.

When we finally got into the event there was a lady in a white fur coat and hat on stage, singing. Her name was Kellis. I looked her up yesterday and she’s actually quite famous. She has sung with Bjork, apparently.

At new year (well 30 seconds after because it is a bit tricky) I opened a champagne bottle and had a swig. It was disgusting! We went home after that and ate cake.

The days between then and now have been awful. I have been really ill. I have had a bad cold. Granny called it flu - she did a ‘flu-test’ on me, which included a question about a 20 pound note and if I would walk to the end of the street to pick it up. I said no. Or actually I would try, but I would probably fail. My Dad thinks it’s just a bad cold.

I think it started about 3am on New Year’s Day. But I have still got it now! I had it for two days while my Cousins were here and the whole four days that my Granny was here! I have barely eaten anything. Over the six days I have had just two pieces of toast, a spoonful of spaghetti and a pancake. That’s all.

Basically, the year has not started well.
