Japan consists of 47 'prefectures', or regions. Between 1999 and 2003 47 European photographers were selected (by the French critic, writer and curator Gabriel Bauret) each to work in a selected prefecture for 20 days. The organisers, the EU-Japan Fest, have instigated a number of cultural exchange activities since 1993, in an attempt to 'achieve a deeper mutual understanding between Japan and Europe'.

I was asked to work in Miyazaki, a sub-tropical region on the Southern Japanese island of Kyushu.
