Projects  » UN COCHE CAMA

Disillusioned after two years working for the British media, Jo and I drove to Spain in our yellow VW campervan (Un Coche Cama!) and stayed for four months.

Armed with just a 1958 Leica M2, one lens and a bagful of black and white film, I was determined to rediscover the joy of being a photographer.

Although a very traditional series of pictures (particularly given what else was happening in British photography at the time) the trip succesfully re-energised me and I returned home to take up a teaching post on the new Editorial Photography course at the University of Brighton.

Included in trip was a short visit to Finisterre, a small town on the west coast of Galicia, literally 'the end of the land'. A seed of an idea grew into The Shipping Forecast, which I began a few months afterwards.
